A perfect office, complete with padded walls, part deux

RedRoom.jpgOne benefit of living out here in the hinterlands is that office space is cheap. Like $1 per square foot cheap. Sure, the office I’m planning on renting for the summer is a former hospital room in a psych ward. Sure, there’s a crematorium in the basement. But hey, there’s a window with a view. There’s room for a desk and a couch. And I can even sneak in my golden retriever (via the stairwell). What’s not to love?

The best part is that I’ll be on the “artists’ floor,” home to an eclectic assortment of painters, sculptors, print makers––you name it. It’s a total throwback to my art school days. I lived in the dorms at Seattle University (Xavier Hall) on a similar floor reserved for art majors. And while admittedly, I’ve never been to a floor dedicated to accounting majors, I get the feeling that we were just a tad more bohemian.

They building even hosts a First Friday Art Walk, when artists open their studio spaces to the public. How cool is that?

What I'm about to say is said with the utmost respect:

I hate you so much right now.

I called about some nearby space today and was told that a measly 120 sq ft would run me $850 a month. This is in the suburbs. And it isn't in a cool old building and there are no awesome artist walks. Fooey.

What's not to love indeed - it can be so inspiring to surround yourself with creative people. Enjoy the new digs!

Jaye--it's one of those funky old buildings that had been empty forever. A two-room office is only $200/month. (!!!)

Wow, it's easy to forget the benefits to the hinterlands when you're enjoying the benefits of a metropolitan area (which I'll admit is, for me, less about museums and more about food). Of course I don't know WHY I forget it when HGTV reminds me that a shanty near silicon valley runs 7-10 times the cost of my suburban Atlanta house.

So the big question for ME is, are you going to open YOUR studio spaces for the public to see the inner workings of the writing experience? (make sure you hide the coffee-pot that does all your writing for you before they show up, you don't want to ruin the mystery)

I'd be content with a private space in my own home. Your office is... *sigh* Enjoy!

...maybe I could go live in one of those offices...

You won't get much work done on the Art Walk days, but you'll have a great opportunity to meet people and push your book. (Art Walks are wonderful. It's so much fun to see different artists' spaces.)

Very nice! $1/sq.ft... holy smokes. That's unreal. All that and character and history, too.

My office is a hand-me-down desk against the wall in my living/dining room. If I want to feel as if I'm in the hinterland, all I have to do is put on my headphones.

...former hospital room in a psych ward...crematorium in the basement

So, should your writing suddenly move from literary to psychological horror, we will completely understand.

Hi Jamie,
It's Paul again, from the great white north. I'm giving this blog thing a try and I wondered what one has to do to get on to your "Shameless Plugs" list?
As far as office space is concerned, I live in Toronto and the rent is sky high. So it looks like you have a pretty good deal. Do you get snow there? If you don't maybe I'll move there and rent some space too. It sounds very bohemian,I like that kind of thing. I've had enough of snow.

Later,

Paul

Paul--I just posted your link. Thanks for asking!

Living in Great Falls, Montana is like living in 1977. In fact the video game Tony Hawk 3 had a skate park located in central Montana called: MULLET FALLS. How apropo.

But hey, the cost of living is incredibly low, and writers, like deer in winter, tend to starve...

We checked out the FF Art Walk on Friday -- stopped by the Columbus Center and Gallery 16. The Columbus Center digs are SWEET. My arty/designer girlfriend fell in love with the corner studio that is currently available on the 4th floor...don't know if I will be able to talk her out of it :-)

It is indeed a cool building. We've thought about having our wedding there.

Sign her up. The more the merrier. We went to the Art Walk on Friday as well. There was a decent turn out.

It's got great karma and the ghosts we've met are completely friendly.

No need to sneak; we love golden retrievers!
