You should never judge a book by its lack of cover

no-image.jpgNo word on covers yet for HOTEL.

The waiting is not unlike the anticipation of seeing your first child come into the world. Is it going to be all cute and cuddly? Or is it going to show up covered in maconium and sportin' a cone-head. I know, I know--I should just be happy with whatever I get, but let's be honest––while all babies are precious, not all babies are beautiful. In fact, some are downright goofy looking. (I know this becase I've seen my own baby photos, I looked like I popped out of someone's chest cavity ala Alien, but with more hair on my head).

My better half delivers babies for a living, so she's assured me that whatever the literary stork brings us, we will undoubtedly love it. I'm sure she's right.

can't wait to see the cover...and get my hands on the book!

Maybe you'll love it...

But bitching about the cover has a long and honorable history that no doubt goes back to complaining about the tubes they stored your scrolls in. It's even popular to contend that one's sales were adversely affected by the choice of cover.

My main complaint about my cover is that there were no blurbs from Stephen King or Ian McEwan. I thought that would have made for a better cover.

Maybe my cover could just be a portrait of Stephen King?

Hey Jamie, hang in there. What a thrill. No matter what it looks like, the book will sell. Have faith!

Hopefully they won't use Tekton as the title typeface.

That's funny and true what you said about babies. I told a nurse at my son's birth that all babies are beautiful, though, aren't they? She replied in her best black nurse accent, "Honey, no they aren't."

I'm looking forward to improving my reading quotient with a purchase of Hotel, too, probably no matter what the cover looks like or what Oprah or Stewart says.

Have they given you an ETA for a cover yet? or is that so far down the line still that you won't know till Christmas? Do you have any say-so or input into the cover for it? At least get to see the options before it's finalized? I know it's standard for authors to have no say-so in the matter, just curious if you were even more special than usual.

I love talking covers. I interviewed the woman who designed my cover,Here's the LinkShe has very many neat, interesting, and educational things to say about book covers and design in general. She taught me a lot and was a blast to work with.

I hope you love your cover, but I'll buy it either way.

Best Wishes.

When my son was born, he looked exactly like Patrick Stewart in his best squinty-eyed Jean-Luc Picard visage, bald spot and all.

I'm sure your cover will be beautiful. If you don't instantly love it, you will grow to like it.

I'm hoping for love at first sight. Sounds like we're close.

Rebecca--thanks for the link. Paul Rand is classic old school. Reminds me of my art school days!
